Fields of Publication
Purnima’s breadth of publications showcases her passion and expertise in these areas and her versatility as a poet, teacher, education and arts writer, editor, and researcher.
A passionate performance poet writing words to empower, inspire, uplift and foster unity, Purnima’s poems and short stories have been featured in newspapers, anthologies, and magazines, including the International Women’s Day organisation, The Nation Newspaper Thailand, Red Room Poetry Sydney, The My Hero Project, The Wee Sparrow Poetry Press, Yuwana Zine, ASEAN Youth Forum, Poetic Reveries, Indian Link Magazine, and more. She explores themes of women’s empowerment, activism, the diaspora, creativity, identity, belonging, mental health and wellbeing and other social issues.
Purnima has written for art, culture, and travel titles as a freelancer for Indian Link, The Melbourne Review, Arts Hub Australia, and Expat Weekend Thailand. Her writing includes exhibition reviews, artist interviews, catalogue essays, museum exhibition texts, and art theory essays for a variety of readers in newspapers, magazines, catalogues and publications, websites, gallery education resources, and books.
As an editor, Purnima has collaborated with arts and education organisations, including schools, museums and galleries, to publish high-quality books and anthologies featuring work by emerging, established, and acclaimed artists, teaching artists, and students, mostly on topics focused on teaching, art and life, the natural environment, activism, culture, and identity.
Purnima’s published research centres around her interests in the connection between visual art and literacy, museum education and teacher-artist issues. She has contributed to journals including Australian Art Education, English Australia, The Canadian Review of Art Education, IGI Global, and The Journal of Artistic and Creative Education with her peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters. Her interdisciplinary approach to teaching creative writing through art has gained international recognition, being widely cited in research publications.
With fifteen years of experience teaching in classrooms and art galleries, Purnima produces innovative resources for teachers and students of secondary school English, writing engaging, curriculum-aligned educational copy promoting critical, creative thinking and visual literacy. Her project-based series ‘Inspired English,’ (Macmillan Education Australia), is aimed at improving secondary English students’ creative writing and critical thinking through art. Together with co-author Susie May, she is currently developing a new resource to inspire secondary school students to read and write poetry with enthusiasm and confidence.
Always seeking to share her firsthand experiences and perspectives with others in the education community, Purnima contributes to school and education blogs and magazines, offering insights on innovative approaches to English teaching, project-based learning, pedagogy for increasing student engagement through unique, authentic learning experiences, and methods for cultivating creativity, connection, and community in school culture.
