Participants will gain an introduction to the origins of ekphrastic poetry, explore and discuss examples of compelling ekphrastic poetry and the famous works of art that inspired them.

You will experiment with writing poems inspired by famous artworks, learn how to adopt different perspectives in poetry inspired by art (such as viewer, artist, character and memory), and explore how art can spark new insights and personal connections. By the end of the workshop, participants will have created poems that are inspired by artworks from prolific artists such as Pablo Picasso and Mark Rothko.

Through a combination of writing exercises and discussion, poets will learn new ways of looking deeply at objects and apply effective visual thinking techniques to articulate what they observe and feel. Participants will be able to share their creations in a supportive, small-group environment.

This workshop is designed for writers interested in gaining new inspiration to further their craft, experiment with poetic voice and the ekphrastic form, as well as engage in a lively discussion of artworks and ekphrastic poetry.

Workshop participants will review examples of compelling ekphrastic poetry and the works of art that inspired them. You will write your own works across a range of text types using images that personally inspire you, which you can bring along, as well as from reproductions of museum artworks around the world, which we will provide. Learn how to write through different perspectives (viewer, artist, subject, memory) and explore how art can spark new insights and personal connections. The workshop offers writers new ways of looking deeply at an object, generating effective strategies for articulating what you observe and feel. In addition to writing exercises and discussion, participants are encouraged (though not obliged) to share their creations in a supportive, small-group environment. Whether you are looking to expand your skills, meet other writers or simply have fun with ekphrasis, the workshops will do just that and more.

Workshop size is limited, so registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
