Taking the Stage at Whitecross Street Festival London 2024: Poetry for a Radical Community

Creativity thrives in community. When we come together through art and words, we begin to cultivate something radical – spaces where voices are heard, identities are honoured and change feels possible. That spirit of bold creativity and collective belonging was at the heart of the Whitecross Street Festival 2024, and I was honoured to be part of it.

As a featured poet on the Words Stage, I performed alongside inspiring national and international artists – from award-winning writers to slam champions. My set explored themes of activism, identity, empowerment, creativity and the courage to live unbound, in celebration of this year’s festival theme: Celebrating a Radical Community.

What makes a community radical? The courage to include. The power to uplift. The commitment to amplify diverse stories. Whitecross Street Festival does this by embracing the arts in an inclusive way – with live mural painting, spoken word, music and craft – transforming public space into a hub of expression, bringing people together, fostering a sense of belonging and reminding us that collectively we can make a difference, challenge the status quo, embrace diversity and strive for social justice.

Whitecross Street Party focuses on street art and performance, with live music, a Words Stage and artisan crafts, bringing people together at one of London’s most distinctive locations. The greatest street artists paint live – you can witness their incredible process from start to finish.

A huge thank you to Paul Lyalls for curating and hosting the Words Stage, and to YMCA London City and North and Islington Council for organising this extraordinary festival. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share my voice, connect with others and be reminded that creativity is something we grow together, in community, for change.
